Challenging Listening Situations Abound!
Think about this Honestly, how often in important conversations, seminars, courses, and lectures has the content and meaning truly passed you by because you weren't really listening?
It happens all the time but if we make ourselves aware of these situation as they arise we too can then train ourselves to become Better Listeners.
Take a look at yourself, honestly, notice the conditions where you find yourself shaking your head saying "huh?" or "I don't need to hear this" then try a few of our ideas here in JerSooz Ezine.
Anyone, upon making a concerted effort can improve their listening skills.
Simply by recognizing some of the common listening faux-pas, making a mental note to Really Listen All of the time, and give yourself (and the others) a chance, you too can become a Better Listener!
One of the most common situations is an extremely crucial conversation where there is Criticism, Negative Emotions or one of the parties becomes Defensive.
Sometimes when you find yourself being criticized either by your boss, parent, co-worker teacher anyone...the tendency is to shut down thinking all the while, "I don't want to hear this". Or, you might want to lash out and defend your integrity right or wrong.
Oopsie! This doesn't work!
How about the sticky listening situation where there are Hard Feelings, you or someone else has Been Unjust, Done Someone Wrong and you want to shout, cry, or even run the other direction.
Woops! Wrong move again!
You have the Choice at this moment to Relax, Be Patient, Hear, Really Listen, Honestly and Openly relaxedly Listen to what is being said. You will be More Competant and under far less stress by avoiding going on the defense or running here.
Another is an important Business Situation or Teleconference where it is over and to your dismay you discover you missed the point altogether!
Oh oh! This one applies to any lecture or conference or even a family meeting but business people in particular.
We at JerSooz are constantly looking for ways we can All help each other to become successful, in Life and in Business, so even though this has come up in past Ezines we think it's a good time to approach it again.
Next time You find yourself in a 'Situation' do the above and also try the below Suggestions- Hear From The Other Persons Perspective
Consider where the speaker or person who has the floor is coming from, how they view the world and the Big Picture of what they are saying.
- Quiet Your Own Thoughts
Relax! The other person has the floor, but if your mind is busy with your own reactions, counterpoints etcetera you won't Ever Really Hear what they are trying to say.
- Wait Your Turn To Ask Questions/Respond
Until the entire speech or statement actually made or completed and it Is your turn, then address your counterpoints, reactions and come to your own conclusions. By doing this you have given yourself a chance to Hear all of what is being said. Knowing this, then you are in a better position to draw your conclusions.
- Avoid Distractions
How many kids in school doodle, stare out the window, fidget, even busily take notes while the teacher is writing on the black or whiteboard? Almost All of them! If you are doing anything other than listening you are bound to miss something! Same applies to us adults.
- Focus on What is Said Not How It's Said
Give the person who has the floor the entire floor! Do not critique their delivery because you will be missing the point. Just because someone has a different form of speaking doesn't mean we can't learn a few things from them.
- Anticipate What Might Be Said Next
When you do all of the above consistantly you will find yourself at peace enough to be in the other persons shoes. In a sense, you become them to honestly be able to say you feel where they are going with it. Then and only then have you truly been listening. This is when you begin to think like the person you are listening to. Finally you are hearing them!
If and when you truly listen you can make your dreams a reality sooner, If only you Believe You Can!
