Tax Time Scam Artists!
Please Read these very carefully.
Here are the 12 Things The IRS Advises You Avoid
1)Offshore Transactions
The danger here is people often use offshore transactions to avoid paying US Income taxes.
This is illegal
2) Identity Theft
When your personal information, (meaning your name, bank account and credit card ID's) are used to apply for loans or credit.
3) Phony Tax Payment Checks
Believe it or not this has been happening
The con artist posing as a Tax Consultant advises to write phony checks to overpay their taxes...and get a BIG refund back from the IRS.
4) The Afro-American scam
This is where Afro Americans are scammed by fake accountants who claim they will get special tax credits or refunds as reparations for Slavery.
There is a $500.00 fine for filing this kind of claim, and it can turn your refund process into a nightmare
5) Claiming Exempt
If you claim Exempt and have not had any taxes taken out of your paycheck you will be in for a BIG surprise!
Don't do this!
6) Falsifying Home-Based Business
a)Claiming running a Business that doesn't exist.
b)Taking Writeoff on Equipment not in Home
c)Claiming Incorrect Business Expenditures not exempt.
7) Calling Scammers Offering Prizes If YOu Pay the Tax On the Prize
If it is a bona-fide offer they will send you an IRS Form 1099 with which you can report the Tax Payment
8) Frivolous Arguments
If you haven't heard of these they are the old scheme where the scammer says "Untax Yourself! I don't pay taxes So Why Should You"
They will charge you for information on how to NOT PAY then your tax filing will be rejected, and they run off with Your Money!
9) Refund Offer for Social Security Tax Payers
How low will they go anyway!
It is a hoax,...But they do it and get away with it!
10) How about the one "I will get you the Biggest Refund For a (Big) Fee"
What the scammer does here is use Your Social Security number to file a phony W-2 form.
They then promise to split the refund with You.
Please, do NOT do this! This person is going to Take Your Money and Run and You will have to pay it all back.
11) Sharing a Dependent
Yes! This is an all-time LOW, but there are some who still try to get away with it. Never Try It! The Government keeps track of Everyone!
12) The Phony IRS Agent
Yes, this is supposedly still a Common Scam going.
Never believe anyone who comes to your door without an official Pre-Arranged Meeting and seeing their credentials.
If you do meet someone at Your front door claiming to be an IRS Agent call 1 800 366 4484 Immediately!
