As many of you know, I was asked to serve this year as President of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition - Sacramento Division. Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death in cases of gynecologic cancer and the fifth leading cause of cancer related deaths in women. According to 2004 statistics published by the American Cancer Society, there will be 25,580 new cases in 2004 and 16,090 women will die of the disease. Unlike breast and cervical cancer, there is no early detection test for ovarian cancer. This makes ovarian cancer a deadly disease and extremely dangerous because it is usually first detected at an advanced stage. If actually detected in an early stage there is a 90% chance of survival.

Because we are a non-profit organization, we are funded by donations and fundraisers. This year to help raise funds for education and awareness in the Sacramento area, NOCC - Sacramento Division will participate in the Human Race. It is a 5k fun run/walk that is presented annually by the Foothill Volunteer Center for the benefit of non-profit organizations. The great thing about this event is rather than using the little energy that women going through chemo have to plan a large event of our own, the Foothill Volunteer Center does all the work of putting on this event. We simply have to gather donations and walk in the event. And for every dollar raised, the Foothill Volunteer Center keeps 25 cents, which is used for senior and volunteer services. The rest of the money comes straight back to our organization. Last year the race raised over $58,000 for over 45 non-profit organizations throughout the Placer and Sacramento Counties.

The Human Race will be on Saturday, May 1st, 2004, at the Maidu Community Center is Roseville. I am walking in memory of my aunt Peggy who lost her battle on October 14, 2002. If you are interested in sponsoring me, walking with our group, or simply raising money for us, please let me know. There is no charge to walk with our group. All donations are tax deductible. I have to send the money in no later than April 21, 2004, to make sure it's all totaled before the race.
